Hannibal’s Princess of a Bear and Hannibal’s Teddy from Litter 40 are celebrating their 14th birthday today. For a giant breed dog, 14 is 108 in human years. Earlier this year three of the five pups from Litter 39 also made it to 14 years so we now have five 14 year olds going into 2018. All are quite mobile and only one needs help getting up.

May 19th, 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of Hannibal Newfs.

In 1975, we acquired Ingleside’s Pooka who was a granddaughter of the famous Landseer, Fjord von der Arx, an import from Switzerland. In 1976, Auroralew’s Big Black George came on board. He was an exceptional carting dog and brought genes from the renown Harbour Beem Kennels of Newfoundland and Dryad Kennels of New York, USA. (Pooka and George went on to become the dam and sire to Hannibal Newfs first litter whelped on May 19, 1977.) The last foundation dog was Swissview Hannibal’s Snowbelle, who contributed more genes from Harbour Beem along with a major ancestry from the famous Little Bear Kennels of Connecticut, USA and Dryad Kennels of New York, USA. All the present-day Hannibal Newfs are directly descended from a combination of our foundation stock going back eight to 10 generations.

The initial goal of eliminating hip dysplasia, a major health concern of the time for Newfs, has been achieved to the maximum extent possible. This has been followed by an even greater objective: to maximize the healthy longevity of Newfoundland dogs while maintaining the sweet disposition that is the hallmark of the breed. Even though we have had significant success in this area it is never enough, and we intend to continue pursuing this goal.
